The Fort Mose Historical Society in conjunction with the State of Florida Park Service seeks to develop a world-class heritage complex dedicated to telling the story of Fort Mose. This facility will spread the story of Fort Mose with educational opportunities for the broadest of audiences. The facility may feature:
- An 8,000+ square foot museum/administration building for the housing of the Black Fortress of Freedom exhibit.
- A living history interpretation of Fort Mose life.
- National competition to design monuments to the people of Fort Mose.
- Trail systems to provide physical and spiritual connections to the landmark.
- A broad range of visitor services to ensure a safe, convenient and pleasant experience.
Trails to the Past
Several trail opportunities will exist in the complex. The first trail system will be an approximately 1,300 linear foot "Story of Fort Mose Trail". The trail will be the primary link to the lookout pavilion and will allow the visitor to learn the story of Fort Mose as they walk the approximate five minutes out to the lookout station. The end of the trail will feature a small lookout area in which the sites and monuments of Fort Mose can be seen and experienced. A second trail known as Handmade St. Christopher medal from Fort Mosethe Flight to Freedom Trail will continue to serve as a setting for the established reenactment program. This dramatic offering is described in more detail later. A third trail to be known as the Fort Mose Pilgrimage Trail will allow supervised access to the site and proposed site monument.
The museum complex will be linked to the entrance pavilion via a boardwalk and trail system. The museum will feature an exhibit hall to house the existing 3,000 square foot Fort Mose Exhibit as well as an activity area for children. Adjacent to the museum will be a living history complex in which a reconstruction segment of the Fort and a continuous living history environment will be presented. Adjacent to the museum, a small picnic area and nature trail will also give visitors a chance to experience the beautiful natural environment.
