| | Put on your 16th century party hat in celebration of St. Augustine’s 444th Birthday! On Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Native American village of Seloy (now the Fountain of Youth Archeological Park) will come alive with demonstrations of culture and lifestyles of natives who inhabited the area 500 years prior to the Spanish 1565 settlement, as well as the Seminole Indian Tribe, and other Eastern U.S. tribes that have been part of Florida’s history. In the evening bring the family to enjoy an Indian Pow Wow that will honor the Native American traditions that are a part of the city’s history. At 6:30 p.m., city officials and the Royal Family will serve free birthday cake in the Plaza de la Constitucion just prior to the free concert by Gatorbone. On Friday, Native American story telling and traditions continue from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Fountain of Youth Park. On Saturday, the Birthday celebration continues at 9:30 a.m. with a re-enactment of the landing by the city’s founder, don Pedro Menendez de Aviles, at the Mission of Nombre de Dios – the area wherethe Spanish colonists came ashore in 1565. The landing re-enactment will be followed, as it was 444 years ago, with a celebration of Mass. Then at 5 p.m. registration for the 16th Cooking Contest begins. At 6 p.m. foods entered into the competition will be presented and judged at the Fountain of Youth Park. There will be plenty of food on hand along with demonstrations that that teach about the Spanish flavors that have influenced the culinary culture of St. Augustine. Authentic 16th Century dinners are available for purchase. Period music and dancing will be performed though out the evening. Admission is free to all St. Augustine 444th Birthday Celebration events.
